Johanna Hulme, head of medicines optimisation and pharmacy professional lead, NICE

Johanna is a registered pharmacist with extensive senior leadership experience in medicines optimisation across the NHS and national bodies. Since 2013, Johanna has worked in and led the medicines optimisation team at NICE, providing clinical and medicines focused expertise across NICE’s guidance portfolio. She has played a pivotal role in incorporating technology appraisals into guidelines, helping to create a more coherent, user-focused suite of guidance for health and care professionals. Johanna also co leads the development of practical tools and resources designed to support the uptake, adoption, and optimal use of innovative medicines.

Johanna’s leadership at NICE spans major guideline programmes, including medicines optimisation, antimicrobial stewardship, medicines use in care homes, and clinical guidelines for managing common infections. Her team also supports the NICE Associates Network, enabling colleagues across the NHS to embed evidence based practice and strengthen implementation at local and regional levels.

Before joining NICE, Johanna held a variety of patient facing roles in hospital pharmacy and primary care, and served as head of medicines optimisation in Bolton, Greater Manchester. She also brings national policy expertise from her time leading the medicines policy team at NHS England. Johanna is committed to ensuring that the clinical and medicines optimisation perspective is visible, valued, and embedded within national guidance. She is passionate about producing content that is relevant, useful, and genuinely supports the people who rely on it to improve outcomes for patients and populations.
