Prof Manisha Kumar, chief medical officer, NHS Greater Manchester

Professor Manisha Kumar is chief medical officer, NHS Greater Manchester Integrated Care Board (ICB) – part of the Greater Manchester Integrated Care System and wider partnership.

Prior to this Professor Kumar was the medical director of Manchester Health and Care Commissioning – a partnership between Manchester Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) and Manchester City Council and one of the first areas to accelerate integrated working. Professor Kumar has been committed to improving quality and reducing unwarranted variation – promoting inclusion and improving population health. More recently – she has led the roll out of the Covid Vaccination Programme and the primary care response to the pandemic in the City of Manchester- focussing on addressing inequalities and evidencing partnership solutions in the delivery of care.

In her role at the ICB Professor Kumar leads on improvement, effectiveness and clinical governance.

Professor Kumar graduated from Manchester University in 1995 has been an inner-city GP for the majority of her career. She is a GP trainer and an advocate for the development of clinical leadership in complex systems. Over the last 20 years she has had key roles in system redesign, neighbourhood leadership and as a CCG governing board member. She is an honorary professor with the University of Salford.
