Dr Andrew Champion, programme director, All Wales Therapeutics and Toxicology Centre (AWTTC)
Andrew has worked in the NHS for over 30 years, covering a wide range of research and managerial roles. He joined AWTTC in October 2023 as the programme director and leads a specialist multidisciplinary team in the delivery of medicines assessment and medicines optimisation for the Welsh population and the NHS in Wales. AWTTC also supports the work of the All Wales Medicines Strategy Group (AWMSG) which advises Welsh Government on the use, management and prescribing of medicines in Wales.
Andrew was previously assistant director of evidence evaluation at the NHS Wales Joint Commissioning Committee (NWJCC), the body responsible for commissioning specialised health services in Wales. His role focused on evidence-based policy development, medicines management and assessment and prioritisation of new, innovative technologies. He was also responsible for the Medical Directorate Programme Management Office which ran a number of all Wales programmes, including positron emission tomography – computed tomography (PET-CT), molecular radiotherapy and advanced therapy medicinal products (ATMPs).
Between 2003 and 2016 Andrew was manager of the National Collaborating Centre for Cancer where he helped establish a centre of excellence that was commissioned by NICE to develop their portfolio of cancer clinical guidelines and service guidance.
Andrew grew up in Birmingham and studied in Cardiff gaining a PhD in radiation biology in 1997. He sits on a number of national committees including NICE Technology Appraisal Committee A and retains a strong interest in evidence-based medicine and research.
